Applying Settings to Carrier Accounts

Once you add a Carrier account, you need to apply various settings to that account. These settings can be changed.

The available settings options vary, depending on the Carrier. See also Carrier Advanced Settings and Enabling UPS Ground and/or Using Number of Packages with Freight Pricing (GFP).

To apply settings to a Carrier account:

  1. Click SETTINGS, select a Carrier, and then select an Account for that Carrier. For example:

The Settings page is displayed for the selected Carrier account. For example:

Tip: The account options vary, depending on the selected Carrier. Most of the account options include an information icon: . Hover the cursor on the icon to display details about that field, checkbox, or radio button.

General Settings

The following options may be available under the Carrier's account name, depending on the type of Carrier selected:

  • Account Nickname: Provides a "nickname" for the account, which may be useful when the Carrier has multiple accounts. The actual account number will still be displayed at the top of this page.

  • This is the Global Default Account: If selected, this account is used when New Shipment is selected on the main Shipping screen and on Orders that are imported without a specified account and service.

  • Default account: This option is applicable if multiple accounts are set up for the Carrier. If the Carrier can be auto-detected from the Order or template, but the specific account to use is not specified "up stream," then this account will be used, if Default account is selected.

  • Show account rates: Select this option to display your contract discounted rates (aka ABR). If not selected, published rates will be shown. (See also Rate Shopping.)

  • Enable Dry Ice and Enable Hazardous Materials: For UPS. If Enable Dry Ice and/or Enable Hazardous Materials are selected, they will be available for selection on the Descartes ShipRush Shipping form (in the Special Materials area), depending on the UPS Service selected.

  • Holiday/Weekend: Bump ship date to weekday: If selected, automatically advances the ship date to the next business day. This option is useful when shipping on weekends and holidays.

  • Set ship date to next week day after: Automatically advances the ship date when processing a shipment after the daily pickup time. Select a time for your daily pickup. For example, if you select 5:30 PM, shipments processed after 5:30 PM will be auto-set to be picked-up the next day.

  • Shipment Reference Required: Shipping services that offer a Reference line will require entry into that field

  • Shipment Reference 2 Required: Shipping services that offer a Reference 2 line will require entry into that field

  • Package DIMs required: Requires entry of dimensions; (DIMs are important for accurate rates)

  • Show 3rd party billed shipments rate as $0.00: If checked, and shipping is via Third Party Billing (TPB), Descarte ShipRush Web shows the rate as $0 (because it is not being billed to the selected ccount). This option is not available for all account types.

Address Verification Settings

  1. Validate all USA addresses prior to shipment processing: If selected, the address check is run automatically before processing the label. Select Basic, Robust, or Strict address validation. See notes, below.

  2. Select Residential flag according to address verification system: UPS only; if the address is residential based on the address verification system, it is flagged residential.

The Address Validation system checks the entered addresses against a large database of known addresses. The address validation feature does not ensure that the address exists or that it is deliverable. Descartes ShipRush Web cannot know whether the intended recipient is present at the provided address. The Residential/Commercial setting is very reliable (typically greater than 90%), but not 100% perfect.

Note: The Basic and Robust settings are only 60-90% reliable. In cases where a direct match is not found, the Residential flag and Zip code verification will fail. Only the Strict setting forces a direct match.

The Address Validation feature will attempt to correct address formatting and zip codes as well as other address elements to conform to the master database. If the input address fails to match, the address may be changed to a close match. However, this correction may change the address from what is intended. The user is responsible for monitoring the changes made by the address-verification system.

Currently, address validation only works on USA addresses. Some addresses may be changed automatically from 'Route' style to street address format.

When shipping with UPS, residential flagging is set automatically by UPS based on the address used, regardless of any settings configured here (or by flagging the shipment manually as Residential on the Shipping screen). If the UPS address database identifies an address as residential, it will always be flagged and charged as such.

The Address Validation feature of Descartes ShipRush Web checks the provided address against the most authoritative database of deliverable addresses. The shipping address is then corrected, if necessary (for example, an invalid zip code or poorly formatted street name is fixed).

Please note the following:

  • The ZIP + 4 is automatically calculated and set on the Shipment.

  • The street address is automatically 'cleaned' into the accepted USA format. For example "1155 NORTH" might be changed to "1155 NORTH ST".

  • If the address is found in the system, it will be set automatically as Residential or Non-Residential in the vast majority of cases.

Tip: On the main Descartes ShipRush screen, pressing the F8 key verifies the Ship To Address (pressing F8 is the same as clicking the Verify Address link).

Examples of Address Validation

  • Provided Address: 120 Lakeside ave suite 101, Seattle WA 98122

  • Changed to: Proper Zip+4, residential check box unchecked

  • Provided Address: 120 Lakeside ave, Seattle WA 98122

  • Changed to: Proper Zip+4, but shipment will fail if Strict checking is turned on in settings because the suite number is missing

  • Provided Address: 2233 Main Street, Seattle WA 98144

  • Changed to: Proper Zip+4, street suffix added automatically (only South Main Street exists in this zip code), residential check box set automatically

  • Provided Address: 2233 S Main Street, Seattle WA 98122 (zip code is incorrect)

  • Changed to: Zip is corrected and Zip+4 added, correctly sets the residential check box automatically

  • Provided Address: 11111 AAA Street, Seattle WA 98144 (this address does not exist)

  • Change to: If only Basic validation is set in settings, this label will print; when set to Strict it will fail

The Clipboard option copies tracking information automatically to the Clipboard. Once the Shipment is processed, you can paste that information into another screen or application.

  • Only Tracking Number: The Shipment's Tracking Number is copied to the Clipboard.

  • Tracking Number and Shipping Cost: The Shipment's Tracking Number and Shipping Cost are copied to the Clipboard.

  • Carrier: %Carrier%

  • Service: %Service%

  • Tracking Number: %TrackingNumber%
